Abstract
Experimental department of the A.N. Bakoulev Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery is the oldest branch of the Center. It was organized concurrently with the Institute of Thoracic Surgery, and the history of the experimental department is closely linked with the history of the Center. Many of the leading cardiac surgeons of Russia had passed through the school of experimental department of the Center.
The experimental department today is a dynamically evolving scientific unit where the studies are aimed at the fundamental problems of physiology of blood circulation, the methods of quantitative diagnosis of the
state of the cardiovascular system, the development of new surgical techniques to achieve full recovery of circulatory function.
The main activities of the department for the last 10 years were the works to develop of endothoracoskopic minimally invasive heart surgery, the study of mechanisms of the blood flow transport and hydrodynamics in
the cavities of the heart and in the great vessels, experimental testing of new materials and implants for cardiovascular surgery.
In the future, the department plans to develop a family of implants for cardiovascular surgery, having a hydrodynamic compatibility with the blood flow, the mathematical modeling of the blood transportation in the heart and main arteries, and the testing of new materials, devices, and methods of treatment for use in the heart and vascular surgery.
