Abstract
The article presents the experience and results of experimental studies conducted at the Institute of Thoracic
Surgery (ITS) of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) (1956–1961), at the Institute of Cardiovascular
Surgery (ICVS) of the USSR AMS (1961–1966) and at the A.N. Bakoulev Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of
the USSR AMS (1967–1976), that is, for the first 20 years of A.N. Bakoulev National Medical Research Center of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation activity. It is shown that these studies,
which were conducted by clinicians, began in 1956–1957, when an animal clinic appeared in the ITS structure. In
1958 an experimental department in the ITS was established, in 1961 it became independent. To the peculiarities
of the experimental research carried out in 1956–1976 the authors attributed their applied significance (most of
clinical studies have had the experimental stage) and complex nature (in the majority of studies in addition to clinicians
the staff of other departments of ITS–ICVS–BICVS participated). The result of this research work was the
award of the Lenin Prize in 1976 for the experimental and clinical research on the application of hyperbaric oxygenation
in cardiac surgery (V.I. Burakovsky, L.A. Bockeria, V.A. Bukharin), as well as the creation in the same year
the long-term program of experimental studies and the Council for Experimental Research.
