Abstract
Vascular ring is a rare congenital abnormality of the great vessels. According to literature sources the frequency
of occurrence of this defect is approximately 1% of cardiovascular congenital anomalies. This review
presents a case of multi-stage surgical correction of a rare anatomical variant of the double aortic arch in the
child. The first stage of correction was separation of vascular ring with repair of antegrade blood flow that was
performed with cardiopulmonary bypass, hypothermia and cardioplegia. The second stage was stenting of
the aortic isthmus. This case demonstrates the possibility of a staged treatment of the complex anatomical
variant of the vascular ring, combined with an extended narrowing of the aorta isthmus, using techniques of
both open and endovascular intervention. The accomplished interventions allowed repair of antegrade blood
flow in the descending aorta without the use of a vascular prosthesis.
