Abstract
Based on archival documents the article reconstructs and analyzes changes in the structure and staffing of the Institute of Thoracic Surgery of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (IThS; now – Bakoulev National Medical Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery) for the first 5 years of its activity (from March 1956 to April 1961). It is shown, how and for what reasons its leadership (A.N. Bakoulev, A.A. Busalov, S.A. Kolesnikov) changed, how and from which institutions the first employees of the Institute were recruited, how its structure and staffs of clinical departments and scientific laboratories are formed. A milestone event in the life of the IThS was its reorganization in 1959 after the transfer of the team to the new building of the City Clinical Hospital No. 1, which in 1960 was transferred to the IThS along with the staff. As a result, over 5 years the number of IThS’s employees increased from 78 to 590 people, the number of clinical departments – from 5 to 11, and scientific laboratories – from 7 (1 office and 2 scientific groups) to 9 (13 groups) structural units. At the same time, the structure of the IThS changed, and its staff were selected taking into account the tasks facing the IThS and changed depending on the changes in these tasks, the volume and level of medical and research work. A logical consequence of these changes was the second reorganization of the IThS in 1961, when the Institute was renamed the Institute for Cardiovascular Surgery of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences with another change in its structure and staffing.
