Abstract
The majority of the aortic aneurysms (AA) are asymptomatic until the development of fatal complications – aortic dissection or rupture. Therefore, searching for diagnostic predictors of the development of these conditions for optimal management and timely treatment is extremely relevant. Current parameters used for this purpose – absolute diameter and growth rate – lack the reliability required to accurate risk-stratification. The assessment of the biomechanical properties of the aorta is quite promising. Arterial stiffness, caused by thickening of the walls of the arteries and loss of elasticity, is associated with certain cardiovascular diseases (arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis) as well as with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The present review is devoted to ultrasound-based techniques – tissue Doppler imaging and speckle-tracking echocardiography – in the assessment of arterial stiffness in AA.
