Abstract
Echocardiography is the main noninvasive instrument to evaluate cardiac valves structures and
functions. Over the last 50 years it allowed one to take a new glance at normal and impaired valve
functions and natural course of valvular pathology. Echocardiography set off a revolution on
revealing and studying valvular pathology and became the most important component of
preoperative study of the patients with such pathology, allowing to define the dates and type of
surgical intervention. Standard echocardiography includes measurements in M- and twodimensional
schedules, spectral and color Doppler echocardiography. Many new approaches
available today are not a part of standard study yet. Complete comprehension of the aortic valvular
apparatus anatomy and pathophysiology of diseases involving aortic valve as well as changes
following surgical intervention on it is an unfailing guide to surgical treatment for aortic valve
pathology. More detailed discussion of echocardiographic techniques used to evaluate the aortic
valve function and prosthesis in aortic position was the aim of this paper.
