Abstract
Introduction. Questions connected with the adequate physical activity of patients after surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases (CHD)
have been discussed in details in home and foreign scientific literature. At the same time the problems of information to be provided to the
families of patients with CHD regarding possible physical activity after surgical management of the defect has remained actual.
Material and methods. The records of cases of the total of 2,189 patients with CHDs, aged up to 18 years, who underwent the surgical treatment
of different forms of CHDs were included in the study as well as the data of 2,189 questionnaires filled in by the parents of these children.
Patients were divided into two groups depending on the extent of limiting of physical activity. The patients after the surgical treatment
of CHD who practically had no limitation for physical and sport activities were included in group I. The patients after the surgical treatment
of CHD with condition that had medical restrictions for physical and sport exercises and who needed individual schedule of training and exercises
under monitoring of health care professionals were included in group II.
Results. According to the data received during questionnaire the parents of 542 (24.8 %) patients were aware of what physical activity was optimum
for their children. Families of 465 (21.2 %) patients had no information on the subject. Most respondents (n = 1182; 54.0 %) found it
hard to answer. The share of respondents who were informed of optimum physical activity for their children was greater among parents of
patients of group I and made up 30.1 %. The families of patients referred to group II responded affirmatively on this question in 17.5 % of
cases. Only 6.5 % of parents of patients of group I did not know what physical activity was appropriate for their children. At the same time
more than a half families (63.4 %) of children from group I hesitated to answer the question regarding optimum physical activity.
Conclusion. It is advisable to prepare and publish the hand-book adapted for parents in which the diagnoses, condition after surgery performed
for CHD, recommendations and contraindications for activities in certain types of sports would be considered as well as the questions connected
with physical activities of children presented with heart diseases would be mentioned. The list of sports arousing the greatest interest
in parents should be included into the hand-book as well as information regarding increase of static and dynamic components for each of these
sports.
