Abstract
Introduction. A study to compare the long-term results of reconstruction and mitral valve replacement due to myxomatous degeneration.
Material and methods. 274 patients were selected with myxomatous mitral valve, operated from 1999 to 2007. Valve reconstruction was carried out in 129 patients and prosthetics were held in 145 cases. Patients were followed at intervals of one year and underwent echocardiography.
Results. The long-term mortality was in the first group after 5 years 10.8%, 10 years – 18.8%. In the second group, respectively, 7.0% and 14.8%. According to the statistical analysis showed a significant change in heart size in both groups.
Conclusion. Reconstructive surgery provide a more favorable prognosis. In cases where reconstruction is not possible, in prosthetic mitral valve necessarily preserve left ventricular geometry.
