Abstract
Bioprostheses are becoming more popular in aortic valve surgery due to their advantages comparing to
mechanical valves. A.N. Bakoulev Center for Cardiovascular Surgery has been developing valve bioprostheses
since 1965, and full spectrum of xenobioprostheses has been created. In 1990 we developed our own cryopreservation
technology and valve banking. We have a clinical experience of using of aortic allografts in
orthotopic position in 85 patients, mainly due to advanced infective endocarditis. In a long postoperative
term we revealed high survival rate and freedom from reinfection and reoperation. In 2001 we introduced the
first in Russia xenopericardial stented bioprothesis of 18–28 mm for aortic position. In 2007 we developed
an original stentless xenopericardial prosthesis.
We have used stented biovalve in 105 patients, while stentless one – in 50 patients. In the late follow-up to
10 years we did not observe structure deterioration in any patient. Haemodynamic performance is excellent
even prosthesis being small sized. The using of new generation of bioprosheses in aortic valve surgery led to
improvement of life quality, due to avoidance of lifelong anticoagulation and low rate of reoperations. It is
necessary to continue the observation of patients for longer follow-up.
