Abstract
Randomized clinical studies evaluating the effectiveness of vitamin C in preventing postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in patients who have undergone cardiac surgery have suggested that vitamin C itself and combined vitamin C can prevent POAF and that vitamin C is an adjunct to conventional therapy (for example, statin, β-blocker) has a stronger preventive effect than vitamin C alone. In addition, vitamin C supplementation was associated with a noticeably shorter, longer stay in the intensive care unit and a reduced risk of side effects. The mechanism of use of vitamin C in POAF is not fully clear. However, more and more data confirm that oxidative stress and inflammation caused by cardiac surgery play a vital role in the pathogenesis of POAF.
