Abstract
Human albumin is a physiological plasma expanding solution. Certain limitations and high cost of it use in presence of alternative therapeutic approaches, such as crystalloid and non-protein colloid solutions, are indicating the need of clear and substantiate guidelines for clinical use of human albumin. Absence of such guidelines has driven a number of researches with quite controversial results. Human albumin is widely used in pediatric cardiac surgery and intensive care. Numerous studies indicate on unfounded use of albumin solutions due to the lack of comprehensive clinical guidelines for the use of human albumin in pediatric intensive care. Many studies that have been conducted in a cohort of adult patients, try to extrapolate their results on to pediatric patients. However, significant differences in the anatomical and physiological characteristics do not allow to use adult clinical guidelines in pediatric practice without appropriate processing and adaptation of the entire information pool. Therefore, the aim of this review is to determine the place of human albumin in the clinical setting of intensive care in pediatric cardiac surgery.
