Abstract
Introduction. Length of patient treatment is necessary to know for activity planning of clinic,
departments of surgical management of patients with valvular diseases and for resources, while
performing cardiosurgical operations. The aim of this study is to compare the length of hospital
treatment after correction of valvular heart diseases in patients of different age groups and detect
the factors that influence on the length of patient treatment, who are over 60 years.
Material and methods. 1544 adult patients were retrospectively included. They underwent mitral
valve procedures during one admission. In most cases, they were performed in combination with
other procedures (coronary artery bypass graft, interventions on the ascending aorta).
Results. The total length of treatment and the length of treatment in resuscitation and intensive
care unit (RICU) were higher in patients at the age of 60 years than in patients under 60 years of
age (22.8 ± 14.3 and 19.2 ± 10.0, p<0.001; 4.7 ± 8.0 and 3.1 ± 6.5, p<0.001, respectively). The
differences of the total treatment between groups of patients at the age of 60-65, older than
65-70 years and older than 70 years were statistically significant (p=0.002), but there were no
differences in the length of treatment in RICU (p=0.2).
In patients over 60 years, the length of treatment was higher, involving such co-morbidities as
diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, myocardial infarction and acute cerebrovascular disease
in medical history and also after the operation on the ascending aorta.
Conclusion. The length of treatment after cardiosurgical operations depends on the age, their
clinical characteristics and management system of medical aid.
